TY Chapter 49: Who Cares

The peach blossoms that bloom beautifully in the season of spring have to wither eventually. Falling from the branches to the ground, they are reduced to soil and dust, never to be seen again.

The life of a human is the same as well. It is impossible to retain one’s youthful smile and beauty.

Eventually, we bid each other farewell.

When the mountainous wind blew, ripples appeared on the surface of the lake. The beautiful but fragile lady leaned on his chest, awaiting the final farewell, it was as though the spring wind had departed, and the peach blossoms were about to expire, that kind of melancholic death.

She turned her head slightly to glance at the fallen Li Ji in the distance, and her eyes filled with profound emotions. Then, retracting her gaze from Li Ji, she directed it toward Lu Chen. Her face paled further by the moment, but her expression also gradually turned tranquil, as though she had accepted this final conclusion.

She even chuckled, strenuously but softly, for a moment, though it was unclear what she was chuckling at. Lu Chen, Li Ji, or perhaps, herself?

“Hey!” With a voice so light that it was almost indistinct, she asked Lu Chen, “You. Have you ever liked me?”

Lu Chen looked at Ding Dang, contemplated for a moment, and replied, “I think so.”

Ding Dang laughed, even though she coughed violently twice in the midst of it. With a feeble voice, she said, “Lying again! How can you reply with a ‘I think so’ if you liked me?”

Lu Chen didn’t respond and simply listened quietly to her words.

Ding Dang sighed as she leaned on his chest weakly. Then, she said, “I like that person over there, but it is a pity that I am wrong about him.”

Lu Chen said, “Don’t speak. Rest a bit.”

Ding Dang ignored him. Gasping for breath lightly for a moment, she continued, “Lu Chen, I am about to die. Can you promise me something?”

Lu Chen looked at her and said, “Speak.”

Ding Dang smiled grimly. Then, she turned to look at Li Ji, and saw that the man whose face was painted with fear no longer carried the carefree and dashing look he once possessed. Even so, tenderness still floated within her eyes and she muttered weakly, “I beg of you, spare him.”

Lu Chen’s eyes were fixated on Ding Dang. After a moment, he said, “He is the one who reduced you to such a state. He despises you. He even…”

Ding Dang shook her head, not refuting anything at all, only saying a few words, “But I still like him.”

Lu Chen’s words came to an abrupt stop. Silently, he gazed at the woman in his embrace and finally, he whispered, “Is it worth it?”

The hand that grabbed Lu Chen’s shirt slowly loosened, as though the final bits of her strength were gradually draining, escaping from her. However, she seemed much more relaxed, and a gentle hint of a smile could be seen on her face, as though back then, at the age when she was the most beautiful, her most tender dream had been realised—— To spend an eternity with the one she loves as a pair of immortal couple, carefree and unrestrained.

Carrying the beauty of conspicuous fresh blood and soul-stirring despair between the boundaries of life and death, she smiled to Lu Chen and said, “Who cares…”

Her head slowly declined downwards. Even so, her gaze remained firmly on Lu Chen, her intent clear amidst her gentleness. Lu Chen took a deep breath and replied, “I get it. I promise you.”

Ding Dang smiled, as though she had been relieved of her final burden. She no longer looked at the two men beside her. Instead, her eyes were on Dragon Lake, at the green mountain and emerald water, as well as the scenery of the mountain reflected in the lake. A wind blew and her long hair fluttered slightly along, and she looked exceptionally tender.

“What a beautiful lake.” Ding Dang whispered. Then, she closed her eyes.

※※※

At the peak of the tea mountain, by the shore of the Dragon Lake.

Everything was silent.

After an inestimable period of time, Lu Chen placed Ding Dang’s body, which was becoming cold, down gently. Then, he stood up and walked over to Li Ji.

Li Ji’s hand pressed firmly on the wound on his thigh. Witnessing Lu Chen’s approach, he cowered backward fearfully. Born in an esteemed family, he had never suffered hardship since young. Even when his family fell, his life was remained significantly better than most other mortals. Eventually, when he was accepted into the Thousand Autumn Doors, due to his limited time in the sect, he didn’t really have the time to experience the fighting and slaughter that occurred among cultivators.

He killed others out of rage, but he still experienced fear when exposed to pain and blood.

“You… Don’t come here! Don’t forget that you promised Ding Dang not to kill me!” Li Ji screamed loudly.

Amidst his scream, Lu Chen was already standing before him. Taking a glance at him, Lu Chen did not say a word and abruptly strikes Li Ji’s nape with a palm.

Li Ji’s screams came to an abrupt stop. His eyes rolled backward and his body tumbled forward. In an instant, he fell unconscious.

……

When Li Ji finally regained consciousness, he realised that the surroundings had darkened. Taking a look at the sky again, it was already in the evening.

A fiery pain emanated from the back of his neck, causing Li Ji to moan through gritted teeth. When he finally sat upwards, he realised that the man whom he feared the most at the moment had yet to leave.

Lu Chen was still standing by the shore of the Dragon Lake, just that at this moment, other than the blood from Ding Dang’s body, his clothes were stained with mud and dirt as well. Before Lu Chen, on the ground by the Dragon Lake, there was a newly erected grave.

There was no tombstone, no pine tree, just a fresh layer of soil silently covering the lady in eternal slumber. The grave faced the lake, gazing upon the mountains and water, as though a lady had deposited her feelings into this painting, smiling silently.

Lu Chen turned around and walked in large strides towards Li Ji. Li Ji immediately crawled backward to avoid him. For some reason, fear gripped his entire body. Despite having looked down on this man for being a mere mortal before, at this moment, he was unable to well up the courage to retaliate against him. In his mouth, he kept repeating the same few words, “Don’t kill me, don’t kill me!”

Lu Chen grabbed the clothes at his chest, dragged him to the newly erected grave and threw him onto the floor. Coldly, he spoke, “Kowtow three times.”

“I will do it! I will do it!” Li Ji hurriedly replied. At the time, he secretly heaved a sigh of relief. Since he was made to kowtow to her, that meant that Lu Chen had decided to spare his life on Ding Dang’s account.

He kowtowed forcefully. Dong dong dong, the three bows were solid, making it impossible for anyone to find any fault with it. Then, he straightened his body and said, “That should be enough, right? So, let me go…”

Halfway through his words, a black glint flashed across his peripheral vision and his remaining words were choked in his throat. At that instant, Li Ji’s heart suddenly contracted and his entire body trembled intensely. He stared at Lu Chen in disbelief.

The black dagger that seemed to have came from the deepest depths of the darkness was in Lu Chen’s hand, and he plunged it mercilessly and savagely into his body.

His flesh severed and blood spluttered.

Li Ji howled loudly. He rolled his body away in agony, trying to escape to the side as Lu Chen stared at him impassively from behind. A bizarre glint flashed across his eyes. That was a flicker of black flame that seemed to be the fire of the underworld, the one that feeds on souls, staring arrogantly and viciously down upon the mortal world.

A hand of his grabbed Li Ji’s neck while the other held the black dagger. Just like the way one picks up a livestock, a hand of his rose while the dagger fell. Time and again, he stabbed his body ruthlessly.

Stab! Stab! Stab!

Stab! Stab! Stab!

Resembling a cruel and merciless demon incarnate from hell appearing in this world, carrying insanity and the fearsome darkness with it, amidst the burning of the black flames, his black dagger stabbed into Li Ji’s body ceaselessly, until all fresh blood and life had been sapped dry from him.

The fresh blood splattered into midair, dyeing Lu Chen’s entire body red. The black flames burned frenziedly amidst the fresh blood, as though feasting on the madness.

“You… promised… to let me… go…”

Completely dyed in blood, Li Ji, in the final moments of his life, gazed at Lu Chen as he said those words with a quavering voice.

At this instant, Lu Chen who was dyed red like a demon, held his dagger tightly as he retreated a single step. He stared at the dying man with both his eyes and an expression as cold as ice, coldly looking on as he breathed his last in pain.

Then, he slowly walked to the newly erected grave by the lake.

He sat down and stared at the lake and mountains ahead of him, as though facing himself, as well as the the person who was lying in the mound beside him. Softly, he muttered, “Who cares…”

(End of 1st arc)

Pine trees are planted on top of graves as they represent the everlasting and undying spirit of the dead. Also, due to the longevity of the tree, it is also a good omen for the children of the deceased to have long lifespans.

They are also easy to sustain, and is tolerant to the heat and the cold.

Phew, finally the end of the first arc. Too much descriptive phrases for my expertise. I tried to keep as close to the races while making them eloquent, but one or two portion still stumped me totally, so I tried to interpret it as closely as I can to the words and context.

TY Chapter 48: Fate of the Couple

Li Ji clenched his fist once more. His face steels, but he was unable to find a word to say.

Ding Dang stared at him sorrowfully, her gaze slowly buried in the color of despair. With newly founded strength, she slowly climbed up from the ground.

The mountainous wind blew and her robe danced along with the caress of the wind. Her pink robe was reminiscent of the peach blossoms in spring, beautiful and delicate. Her hands brushed across her face lightly to wipe away her tears, but they were unable to wipe away all of it. Her white fingers adjusted the hair that had fallen to the front of her face to the back of her ear so as to make herself neater and prettier.

The peach blossom-like lady beneath the sun trembled slightly in the midst of the wind, resembling the most beautiful and yet desolate sight of a blossom before its withering.

Gently, she spoke, “Li lang, do you despise me?”

Li Ji didn’t respond.

Ding Dang stared at him. After a moment, she slowly lowered her head and said, “I get it.”

Li Ji harrumphed and said, “Don’t act so pitifully. Did you think that I was oblivious to what you were thinking of when you suddenly lit a torch at the peak of the mountain? Are you calling for your lover, who is waiting at the bottom of the mountain? How many times have you made me a cuckold these days!” At this, he became incomparably incensed and he glared intensely at Ding Dang.

Ding Dang shook her head, and with an ashen complexion, she said, “I have not done anything apologetic to you, but if you must think of it that way, there is nothing I can do. If you don’t want me… me… me…” As though her heart was aching deeply, she couldn’t courage to finish those words. However, after a moment, she gritted her teeth and said, “Even if it is without you, I still wish to cultivate. Return me my Spirit Stones. At most, we will just be strangers to one another from now on.”

Li Ji lashed out, “Didn’t I tell you just now that I don’t have it now? A thousand Spirit Stones isn’t a small sum. Give me some time. I will return the sum to you within a year.”

Ding Dang massaged her chest as she smiled drearily, “Since you also know that it isn’t a small sum, how can I afford to wait a year for you? Who knows how you would be by then. Anyway, I beg of you to leave an open path for me. Either you bring me up the mountain, or return me my Spirit Stones, and I will visit the Immortal Discerning Mirror myself.”

“I don’t have it!”

Ding Dang gritted her teeth and said, “If that’s the case, then I will stake my everything on a journey to Nansong Mountain then.”

Li Ji was taken aback. His complexion immediately darkened as he roared, “You bitch! What do you intend to do? Are you trying to intentionally turn me into a laughingstock of the entire sect? Are you trying to make unable to walk with my head held high in the future?”

Ding Dang glanced at Li Ji and her lip quivered. Eventually, it formed a disconsolate smile and she turned around to walk down the mountainous path.

Li Ji immediately rushed over and grabbed Ding Dang’s shoulders. He bellowed furiously, “What do you intend to do? Are you insane? Why must you coerce me like this?”

“I am not coercing you!” Ding Dang shook him off and continued walking forward. With a lump in her throat from all the crying, she whimpered, “I… I am but an ordinary woman. I am incapable of thinking that much, all I want…”

Before she could finish her words, Ding Dang’s body stiffened and she froze.

By the shore of the Dragon Lake, everything quietened down abruptly. Even the slight mountainous wind that was blowing disappeared.

Ding Dang slowly lowered her head to look at her body.

A bloodied blade had pierced through her abdomen. Crimson red blood dripped slowly from the blade onto the earth, mixing together with the filthy mud, turning it the color of black.

Excruciating pain gushed like waves from her abdomen, and it seemingly tore her slender body apart and crushed her heart. She slowly turned her head around and looked at the man behind her in despair, disbelief and desolation.

“You…” She pointed to Li Ji as a soft, pained mutter escaped her throat.

With a deep roar, Li Ji pulled out his blade, causing blood to splatter about. Ding Dang cried sorrowfully and her body shuddered. Just as it was about to collapse onto the floor, Li Ji grabbed her shoulder once more and as though an Asura, he stabbed the cold blade once again into Ding Dang, this time into her chest.

Keng…” Ding Dang’s entire body shriveled together, resembling a child frightened of pain. With a pale face, she stared despairingly at the man beside her. Li Ji removed the blade from her once again and took a step back. Fresh blood spurted out from her like a fountain, dyeing Ding Dang’s lower half red.

Slowly, Ding Dang collapsed to the floor. Her face still carried traces of her disbelief, but at the very last moment, her face slowly calmed down. Gazing quietly at Li Ji, unwillingness, anxiety and frustration blinked into her eyes.

※※※

Suddenly, the wind blew. A furious howl echoed. Without warning, a figure appeared from the mountainous path and rushed forward. In an instant, Li Ji was knocked flying from Ding Dang’s side.

Suspended in midair, Li Ji was shocked. However, he quickly retaliated by directing the sword straight toward the charging figure.

The one who charged out was Lu Chen. Facing the blade, he tilted his body and sent a fist toward Li Ji’s face.

Li Ji had already cultivated under the Thousand Autumn Doors for some time. Even though he couldn’t be said to have reached Minor Achievement in his training, he had still achieved some progress in the lowest cultivation realm, Lianqi stage. No matter what, he surely was stronger than ordinary mortals. When he saw that it was a villager from Clear Stream Village at the bottom of the mountain, he sneered coldly. Stabilising his body, he raised his hand upwards. As long as he manages to block this punch, killing this mortal devoid of any cultivation easy should be an easy task.

Yet, at this moment, he felt a sudden and intense pain on the thigh of his right leg. Instantaneously, as though his body had been severed apart, an excruciating pain pulsated through his entire body. Li Ji howled loudly as he retreated in horror. Only when he lowered his head to take a look did he realise that while Lu Chen was sending a fist toward him, his other hand was holding a black dagger treacherously, and mysteriously escaping his attention, Lu Chen had managed to stab it straight into his thigh. After which, he viciously pulled it to the sides, tearing open an appallingly gigantic wound.

Such means and such brutality, Lu Chen was truly a demon beyond any of his imaginations. Despite obviously not possessing any cultivation, as just an ordinary mortal, he was able to crush him instantaneously. Unstable, Li Ji crashed onto the ground. Catching sight of the demon-like black dagger in Lu Chen’s hand, fear manifested on his face.

Just as Lu Chen was about to advance forward toward him, he heard Ding Dang’s voice from behind, “Lu Chen…”

Lu Chen’s footsteps halted. Glancing at the frightened Li Ji, he kept his dagger. Then, he walked over to Ding Dang and hugged her.

Fresh blood gushed onto his body, dyeing the cloth covering his chest. Silently, Lu Chen stared at Ding Dang’s body with a lowered head. His gaze swept across the the blurred fusion of blood and flesh at her abdomen, as well as the wound through her chest.

Ding Dang’s body trembled for a moment.

Lu Chen quietly tightened his embrace on her.

With strenuous effort, Ding Dang looked at him and said weakly, “My wound… You… Can you save me?”

Hugging her, Lu Chen was silent for a moment before shaking his head slowly.

Ding Dang cried. She cried miserably and her teardrops fell like pearl drops onto her bloodied body. After a moment, she looked at Lu Chen through eyes blurred with tears, as though an innocent child grasping onto her final straw of hope. She raised her hands which were moist with fresh blood and feebly grasped onto Lu Chen’s shirt. Leaning her head on his chest, through choked sobs, even her voice was trembling:

“I… Am I going to die?”

Lu Chen held her even tighter. Meeting her gaze, after yet another moment of silence, he replied softly, “Yes.”

Lianqi has appeared once in the novel before.
Lianqi literally translates as ‘Forging Breath’, and it is the fundamentals to cultivating.

Gazing quietly at Li Ji, unwillingness, anxiety and frustration blinks into her eyes.

It is clearly stated that she is feeling these emotions out of pity/sympathy for Li Ji (if I didn’t interpret it wrongly). However, I am unable to find a way to phrase it in so… Compromising.

TY Chapter 47: Whose Feelings are Deeper

The back of the tea mountain, by the shore of the Dragon Lake.

The male was dashing while the female was alluring. They should have been a pair of ravishing couple crafted by the heavens, but for some reason, they were staring furiously at one another, arguing intensely over something.

The female was Ding Dang, while the male was the one who was just accepted as a disciple into the Thousand Autumn Doors, Li Ji.

Ding Dang’s appearance was a mess. Her clothes and sleeves had traces of pulling and tugging, while her hair was scattered all over. A strand of hair of hers fell on her snowy-white cheeks.

On the other hand, nothing seemed to be off for Li Ji as to his normal self. Just that, his eyebrows were knitted tightly together and was rage clearly expressed on his face. Glaring at Ding Dang with suppressed anger that was on the verge of erupting, he howled, “Why? Why? Why? Where did all of those rumors come from? How many times have I told you? The matter of bringing you up the mountain to the sect cannot be hurried, it has to be done slowly!”

Ding Dang sneered coldly. With a glare as sharp as knives, she replied resentfully, “Who are you trying to fool? Back then, when you took my spirit stones, you stated clearly that as long as you are accepted into Thousand Autumn Doors, you would immediately bring me in as well, and we would walk the path of cultivation together. Barely a few days have passed, and you are already intending on going back on your words?”

The rage on Li Ji’s face intensified, and he shouted, “How can it be accomplished so easily? It is not like I have a complete say in the matter. Besides, the sect’s Elder Xu has just died tragically to an assassination by the demonic cult, and the entire sect is agitated at the moment. All of them are busy hunting down the demonic sect culprit, so how can I bring up the issue at a time like this?”

Nonchalant to what he just said, Ding Dang sneered coldly, “You sure put it nicely. Do you take me as some foolish woman from the countryside? I have already looked into the matter. The Thousand Autumn Doors is helpless in the face of the matter, and could only report the incident up to the Immortal Alliance for them to redress its grievance. Now that the Thousand Autumn Doors is done with the funeral of Elder Xu, there is no longer any constraints holding you back. Furthermore, didn’t your sect leader just accept a new disciple a few days ago?

Li Ji expression froze. For a moment, he was speechless.

On the other hand, Ding Dang bit her lips and stomped her feet, “If you are really reluctant to do so, then return those Spirit Stones to me. Let’s just go by the original plan we agreed on. You will help me to gather a thousand Spirit Stones so that I can pay a visit to the Immortal Discerning Mirror. Whether it works out for me or not, I will leave it to fate!”

Li Ji clenched his fist tightly as his face flushed red, “I… How can I gather so many Spirit Stones all of the sudden?”

Ding Dang stared at him for a brief moment before replying, “This won’t do, that won’t do. Now, you are already treading on the path of cultivation, and a bright future has unfolded before you. Yet, I am still stuck in this village by the wilderness, suffering from the contempt and disdain of others. Anticipation filled me everyday, yet I could barely see you once in awhile. Do you know how that feels?”

Ding Dang’s eyes were already red by the time she finished her words. Water glistened within her eyes and a drop of tear trickled down her cheek.

Li Ji gritted his teeth and said, “I have already said it. This matter cannot be hurried. Give me some more time.”

Ding Dang wiped away her tears. Somehow, toward Li Ji, her gaze gradually softened and sorrow reflected in her eyes. With a tender voice, she said, “Li lang, Li lang, are you really unaware of my feelings toward you?”
Li lang -> It is a very dear way of a female addressing her beloved.

Hanging his head, Li Ji remained silent.

Ding Dang stepped forward and said, “From the first time I met you, I was already in love with you. From the moment you drew me those few paintings, I have dreamed of accompanying you my whole life. For you, I am willing to do anything. Are you unaware of it?” Sobbing quietly, she continued, “I want to cultivate, but more than that, I want to be with you. I want the both of us to cultivate and attain enlightenment together. I want the both of us to be carefree as a pair of eternal immortal couples. Can we? Can we?”

At which, she stretched out her hand to grab Li Ji’s and brought it to her chest as she stared at him sorrowfully.

Li Ji lifted his head and many different expressions flickered across his face. Hesitation, anxiety, delight, expectation, depression, fear. All kinds of emotions flashed across his face in a split moment. In his palm, he felt the warmth of female’s body, as well as the familiar sensation of her soft skin.

Yet, his expression suddenly cooled. Staring into Ding Dang’s eyes, he spouted coldly, “How many times have you held a man’s hand like this?”

Ding Dang’s body shuddered, as though she had fallen into an ice chamber in an instant. Even her hands turned cold in that instant. She retreated a single step, but her body jerked suddenly. Li Ji had grabbed her palm tightly.

With widened eyes, savagery manifested on his face. He took a step forward and closed in on Ding Dang. His gaze, as sharp as a dagger, was fixated on her, as though bent on peering into the depths of the woman’s heart.

Even his words seemed particularly harsh at the moment, “Before me, how many men have you slept with?”

Ding Dang’s body trembled. Her face was ashen white, her lips quivered unceasingly and her chest rose and fell intensely, as though she was unable to catch her breath. Her tears flowed down uncontrollably.

She shook her head vigorously, but she was unable to find a single word to say.

Li Ji gritted his teeth and his extraordinarily handsome face warped. Staring at Ding Dang furiously, he flung off Ding Dang’s hands and roared, “You bitch, why did you deceive me!”

Ding Dang staggered backward uncontrollably. Tear-stricken, she cried, “It is not like that. I truly love you. I sincerely want to be with you for my entire life…”

“Who wants to be with you for their entire life!” Li Ji howled, interrupting Ding Dang’s words. His eyes were slightly red and he spat through clenched jaws, “A shameless and vulgar slut like you who can do it with anyone actually dares to dream of immortality? Scram!”

Seemingly unable to stand steadily, Ding Dang fell onto her bottoms on the ground, paralysed. With a face void of color, she stared at Li Ji. On the surface, she looked as though she had lost her calm and was incapable of speaking clearly. “You… How could you do this? Back then, when you wanted money from me, when you whispered those sweet nothings to me, you weren’t like that.”

Li Ji kicked a pebble by his foot. Putong, the pebble sank into the depths of the Dragon Lake. It seemed as though his mind was completely clouded with rage. Pointing at Ding Dang, he was no longer capable of suppressing his fury and he stared at her as though looking his mortal enemy, “Why didn’t you tell me that earlier then? The reason why you used those dirty money to pave my way was all for your own benefit, am I right?!”

Ding Dang laughed in despair as she stared at the man. Her face was still as pale as a sheet of paper and her tears never stopped streaming down her face. However, her eyes appeared to look slightly clearer. In the midst of her anguish, she quietly gazed at Li Ji before replying softly, “Li lang, I seem to recall that you happily took all those money to pave yourself a path to the skies.”

The full name of the title is 谁言情深, which means ‘Who can tell whose feelings are deeper’

TY Chapter 46: Fish on the Hook

Lu Chen continued walking along the mountainous path, gradually advancing higher and higher upward. The view of the straw cottage and the village beneath the mountain gradually grew smaller and the small stream that flowed through Clear Stream Village resembled a slim but long snake.

The tea mountain was tranquil.

Sounds of chirping and the wind could be heard, but it was still tranquil.

There were many different paths on the mountains, and there would be a fork every now and then. Lu Chen would stop in his footsteps and ponder for a moment. Then, glancing upward at the tea mountain and recalling the location where the fire torch lit up, he continued advancing.

After an hour or so, he stopped by a mountainous path nearing the peak of the mountain. Before him, below a spirit tea tree, there was a withered branch that was charred black, as though it was burnt.

Gazing at the branch, Lu Chen walked up and squatted next to it. Then, after picking it up and examining it closely for a moment, he suddenly reached out to touch the charred portion.

It was still slightly warm.

He stood up abruptly and scanned his surroundings, be it the ground, bushes or the forest.

There were disorderly footsteps all over, some of the bushes skewed from being stepped on and there were quite a few broken twigs and floating leaves.

The mountainous wind blew, bringing a chill to the high altitudes of the mountainous peak.

Lu Chen stood on his original position for a moment before proceeding forward with an impassive expression toward the back of the tea mountain, in the direction of the west foothill.

※※※

Huala!

Waterworks suddenly sounded from the clear stream, shocking Old Yu, who was sitting under the large Chinese scholar tree. Raising his head to take a look, he saw the fishing rod shake intensely. After freezing up momentarily, intense joy appeared on his face as he hurriedly pulled his fishing rod in.

The fishing rod first went taut. As he pulled the fishing rod backward abruptly toward him, a large force suddenly surged through the fishing rod, and with a dull thud, the fishing line snapped.

Old Yu retreated two steps involuntarily and his heart sank. Just as he was about to continue doing something, he saw a flash of black shadow in the depths of the water which disappeared in the blink of an eye. Ripples appeared on the stream, as though the wind was blowing on it. Very quickly, the ripples started to slowly fade away and the surface of the water regained its calm state. In the clear water, no further abnormality could be seen as it reverted back to its original state.

“Aiya!” The old fisherman released a furious howl. He stomped his feet, his back slouched and disappointment enveloped his face. At this point, he suddenly heard a voice from his back. Someone chuckled and spoke gently, “That was such a pity, that seemed to be a large fish.”

Old Yu turned around. At some point, a young man had started standing behind him under the large Chinese scholar tree. He was dressed in a white shirt and his features were dashing. One of his hands held a fold-able fan, and a drawing of the mountains and flowing rivers could be seen on it. Even in this sweltering summer day, he looked elegant and exuded an extraordinary aura.

This young man’s smile was tender and, not to mention, he was good looking as well. The feeling that he induced in others at first sight was intimacy and comfort. Old Yu’s first impression upon seeing the young man was that the fellow seemed to be even more good-looking than the Li Ji from a while ago.

However, he had never met this person, so it was unlikely that he was a resident of Clear Stream Village. At the same time, Old Yu wasn’t a sociable person. He frowned, and without saying a word, turned back, picked up his fishing rod and started to fix his fishing line.

The young man behind did not panic. Rather, with a smile, he gazed at Old Yu. After a moment, he said, “Old fisherman, have you been fishing here for a long time?”

“Un.” Initially, Old Yu did not intend on answering his question. However, the young man’s attitude was too polite, which made him feel a some guilt for snubbing him. Thus, he answered him subconsciously.

The young man fanned himself twice as he looked at the sky, “Such a hot day. It might be an uncomfortable weather, but I heard that there are fishes that are different from the others when the weather is hot. These fishes would choose to swim to the surface instead. The situation a moment ago could very possibly be a result of that.”

Old Yu was taken aback. He turned around to look at him, “Do you mean it?”

The young man chuckled, kept his fan and cupped his hand, “I have only heard of it, so I dare not guarantee it.”

Old Yu pondered for a moment before nodding his head, “Alright, I will continue fishing here then.”

The young man nodded with his head with a smile. Not saying anything else, he stood under the shade of the large Chinese scholar tree, as though this transient life we were all born with should be lived leisurely and unconstrained.

Old Yu did not feel repulsed by his actions at all. Besides, the young man wasn’t interfering with his fishing. Just that, when he momentarily glanced about, he would see that in the distance, in some corners and on the roads of the village, there were a few other figures and their faces were foreign to him.

※※※

Unlike Lu Chen who had no attachments whatsoever, the plump Old Ma, who was packing his luggage in the back of his small tavern, seemed to realise that the items that belonged to him, or rather, the items that he wanted to bring away, seemed to be exceptionally numerous.

He packed them one after another, filling them into one bag after another. In the end, even he himself couldn’t stand it any longer. He stared at the mountain-like luggage that filled half of his dwelling and depression loomed over his face. He muttered, “Forget it. If the fellow were to see this, he would definitely reprimand me severely.”

He shook his head. Pain and regret plastered his face as he kicked off a few bags of luggage with a deep sigh. Then, he picked up another few and repacked them. In the end, only three bags were left in the center of the room.

Old Ma stopped packing. Instead, he walked toward a wall and pulled out a drawer forcefully. After which, his hand fumbled about the corner of the wall and in the next moment, a secret aperture revealed itself.

A bulging sack lied in the secret aperture, and the faint sound of knocking could be heard from within, as though it was filled with numerous little pebbles. Old Ma carefully carried the sack up and a satisfied expression appeared on his face. He used his hand to touch it lightly before exerting his strength to carry it. After which, he walked over to the center of the room and stuffed it into the depths the one of three remaining bags.

Accomplishing this matter, Old Ma heaved a sigh of relief and satisfaction appeared on his face. As he was about to leave, he surveyed the surroundings for one last time. Yet, at this moment, from the main entrance of the tavern, several clear knocks could be heard.

Peng, Peng peng!

Accompanying the knocking was an extremely gentle voice of a young male from beyond the door, “Is there anyone inside?”

Old Ma turned around and looked at the entrance of the small tavern. For some inconceivable reason, his eyebrows knit together.

※※※

The sunlight scattered onto the ground in the form of thousands and thousands of golden rays, each incomparably searing. Yet, the water of the Dragon Lake at the back of the tea mountain was as calm as a mirror, as though a beautiful gemstone was embedded into the mountain peak. In fact, when a person approaches the surface of the lake, he would feel a rare, slight humid and cooling sensation even in this sweltering weather.

The green mountains and the clear emerald water. The mountain reflected in the water while the lake radiated a painting of the mountain, creating an incomparably picturesque scenery.

The boundary between the water and the mountain should have been a land of calmness. Yet, a ruckus broke out by the shore of the lake. Two figures were standing by the Dragon Lake. A male and a female, facing each other.

TY Chapter 45: Torch in the Day

Seeing Old Ma open his mouth only to close it hesitantly, Lu Chen raised his eyebrows slightly, “What’s wrong?”

Old Ma smiled bitterly, “This matter is a little… Based on the rumors, the day that Old Ma went missing, quite a few people on the road outside the Immortal City heard his exclaim concurrently. What Old Liu shouted wasn’t curses directed at the demonic cult, but Hall Master Xue’s name.”

Lu Chen’s expression warped slightly as he said with a suppressed voice, “Blood Warbler?”

Old Ma nodded his head, “Yes. The atmosphere in the Immortal Alliance seems to be a little tense, and the Fleeting Cloud Division is in chaos at the moment. As for Hall Master Xue, it is said that she has been isolated in her own quarters for numerous days already.”

Lu Chen pondered for a moment before shaking his head, “Xue Ying’s temper may not be good, but it is unlikely for her to be a spy of the demonic cult.”

Old Ma was slightly surprised. Gazing at Lu Chen, he asked, “I remember that you had barely met with her, how can you be so sure of it?”

Lu Chen replied blandly, “Ten years ago, she participated in the battle of the barren valley as well.”

Old Ma didn’t respond to his words. After a moment, he nodded his head and went quiet.

※※※

The situation in the Immortal City changed rapidly as the shadows started to move. Treacherous and dangerous, definitely, but too far away, so it didn’t seem to have the slightest impact on the small village thousands of miles away.

The residents of Clear Stream Village continued on with their peaceful life. Most of them were still striving hard for the fleeting dreams in their hearts.

On the sixth day of the eighth month, when Lu Chen was walking down the mountain as he always did, he met Ding Dang, who was walking up the mountain, yet again. Different from the previous few encounters they had, Lu Chen could tell with a single glance that Ding Dang seemed a little out of it today. Her features were as beautiful as always, but her complexion looked slightly haggard. She was no longer spirited, and in its place was worry. In fact, when Lu Chen passed by her, with her head slightly lowered, she didn’t even notice him.

For some reason, Lu Chen did not stop her. Instead, he stared silently at the back of the lady as her lonely figure trudged up the mountain, toward the Dragon Lake faraway on the top of the mountain.

Could this be a gamble?

Could the stake be her entire life?

The back figure of the one disappearing into the distance looked exceptionally fragile and forlorn. When she disappeared behind the mountainous forests, Lu Chen quietly turned around and headed toward the village. However, for some reason, until he reached the small tavern, that slightly forlorn silhouette continued to twirl around his mind. For some reason, he was unable to shake off a weird feeling of unease.

Seeing Lu Chen, Old Ma hurriedly walked over. Agitation could be seen on his face as he closed the door and pulled Lu Chen over to the seats.

Lu Chen frowned as he looked at the nervous fatty, “What’s wrong?”

Old Ma took in a deep breath. Then, with a suppressed voice, he said, “There’s something amiss with the situation.”

A gleam flashed across the depths of Lu Chen’s eyes as he said, “Speak.”

Old Ma said, “I have just received news that these few days, three of the Shadows under the Fleeting Cloud Division had been killed.” Raising his head, he looked at Lu Chen. With a hoarse and suppressed voice, he continued, “Among the dead, one was a Shadow Zhang Jiu Ping was responsible for whereas the other two were people whom Old Liu came into contact with a few years ago.”

Lu Chen went silent. Sitting by the table, he didn’t say a word. Old Ma looked at him and continued softly, “We can’t confirm by the news itself that it is the doing of the Three Realm Divine Cult at this point, but…”

“It’s them. They would rather kill the innocent than to allow their target to escape.” Lu Chen suddenly interjected.

Old Ma found himself unable for breathe for a moment. Then, gritting his teeth, he said, “If that’s the case, we can’t simply wait for our turn. I will…”

Before he could finish his words, his voice trailed off abruptly, as though he had suddenly thought of something. At the same moment, Lu Chen shook his head lightly and spoke, “There is something queer going on with the Fleeting Cloud Division. If there isn’t a traitor within, it means that their actions are closely surveyed. So, we can’t approach them.”

Old Ma nodded his head slowly as calmness gradually returned to his face. Knitting his eyebrows for a moment, he replied, “You’re right. I will arrange make arrangements, so let’s leave here.”

Lu Chen asked, “How long will you take?”

Old Ma replied, “Three days… At minimum, two days!”

Lu Chen pondered for a moment before saying, “If we were to suddenly disappear, it would mean that something suspicious is going on here. Perhaps, we might even attract the attention of the demonic cult. I am just a forlorn fugitive, but what about you?”

Old Ma harrumphed, “I am also fine with it. After all, didn’t I survive the last few years? Besides, there aren’t many in the Immortal Alliance who are aware of my background. At the very most, there are only two.”

Lu Chen looked at him and asked, “Who?”

Old Ma replied, “Tianlan Zhenjun and Hall Master Xue.”

Lu Chen nodded his head and stood up, “Then, it would be best for you to start making arrangements.”

Old Ma replied, “Alright.”

※※※

Walking out of the tavern, the weather outside was clear and sweltering, just as before. The little village under the rays of the sun seemed exceptionally peaceful and calm. Lu Chen surveyed the surroundings and emotions welled up in him. He had lived here for ten years, and he remembered every single blade of grass and log of wood here. Even though the residents here couldn’t be considered as kind souls and he was barely acquainted with them, he still felt a tinge of warmth from the village, unexpectedly.

However, he quickly swept aside his emotion and headed for the straw cottage. There were also items that he had to pack in that lonely cottage by the foot of the mountain.

When he passed by the large Chinese scholar tree, Lu Chen’s footsteps halted for a moment. He looked at the old fisherman who was busy fishing and smiled. Eventually, deciding against saying anything, he walked right by him.

Cicadas shrieked behind his back with all their might, seeming to frenziedly resist this sweltering weather with all their might.

Walking on the mountainous path, Lu Chen took a look at the tea mountain. For many years, the only one who has been closer to him was probably only that lady.

It was a pity that she had placed her bets on another man.

However, this was fine as well. No matter what, the other party had more of a future than him.

The edges of his lips curled up into a bitter smile. The next instant, his smile suddenly froze. That was because, in the faraway peak of the tea mountain, he saw a glimmer of fire. After the flame waved about for a moment, it disappeared swiftly.

Was that… a fire torch in the day?

Since it was a gamble, one had to bear the consequences.

Lu Chen walked into the straw cottage and started to pack his items. Just that, walking to and fro in the straw cottage, he picked up some items only to put them down after awhile. Soon, he sat down by the bed and sighed, realising that he really had no attachments.

He remained quiet for a moment and confusion unwittingly appeared in his calm gaze, but it disappeared quickly. After a moment, he suddenly stood up, opened the door and started treading up the tea mountain.

The spirit tea trees that filled the mountain swayed along with the wind and the green leaves were filled with liveliness. It seemed as though the season of flourishing summer wasn’t frightened off by the scorching sun.

TY Chapter 44: Overlapping Phantoms

The Three Realm Divine Cults had been in decline for many years now. Even though its name continued to be mentioned around, and sometimes, wait it committing certain foul deeds here and there, compared to ten years ago, the cult was far from how it was.

※※※

Thus, the tense and dismal atmosphere was only limited to the internal of the Immortal Alliance, concentrated mostly in the Fleeting Cloud Division. Of course, orders to investigate the Three Realm Divine Cult had already been issued from the top brass, and all kinds of powers from all types of locations had already started moving both in the open and in the shadows. However, on the surface, nothing seemed to have changed in the Immortal City. At the very most, it was just a topic for discussion after a meal.

On this day, the former Fleeting Cloud Division sentinel, Old Liu, had finished delegating all of his responsibilities and had officially retired. His emotions were a complex, feeling both depression and happiness at the same time.

Happiness, because that he was able to work in the Immortal Alliance. Working in the Immortal Alliance was something most cultivators, especially those from middle to small scale sects, looked forward to, and was the ideal career for them. It provided them the opportunity to attain even better resources, not to mention that they would be granted respect from others, something that they would find hard to achieve otherwise.

Depression, as these things came with a price. Often, they would need to shed sweat and blood for it, sometimes even requiring them to stake their lives. However, after he retired, it all came to an end.

Old Liu didn’t know many people from the Fleeting Cloud Division but even so, he had some close acquaintances. Thus, on this day, everyone gathered together to offer him a toast. However, it was a pity that the young man whom he thought well of, Bian Zhe, had left Immortal City a few days earlier, due to his responsibilities, and thus, was unable to send him off into his retirement.

Old Liu felt some regret. However, drinking and chatting with his other brothers of the Fleeting Cloud Division was a jolly and exhilarating event. At the end of the journey, he had seen through many things and had learned to let go. Thus, he was no longer as restrained in his words. Under the effects of alcohol, he even half-jokingly spoke of words that he would have never dared to say otherwise to a superior who came to see him.

That superior was a lady, and she was usually prim and proper. However, tonight, she simply brushed it all off with a smile, unbothered by it. On the other hand, the rest by the table paled. They look at Old Liu as though they were looking at a monster, and no one was trying to strike up a conversation at all.

Old Liu noticed that something was amiss, but under the influence of alcohol, his mind was unable to think clearly, so he chose to dump it all at the back of his mind. By the time his mind cleared up, it was already the morning of the next day, about time for him to leave the Immortal City.

That morning, sitting on the bed, Old Liu broke out in cold sweat. Then, he hurriedly packed everything and fled quickly, not daring to stay in the Immortal City for a moment longer, not even bothering about the buddies that he had made an appointment with to send him off.

It was fortunate that there wasn’t any accident during his journey out of the city. Amazingly, it seemed that the female who was nicknamed ‘Black Widow’, did not get angry. While praying to be spared from within his heart, he chastised himself for acting foolishly. After treading so carefully his entire life… to think that he would commit such foolishness at the end of his journey.

As such thoughts went in his mind, he walked out of the grand doors of the Immortal City and gradually tread further away from the city.

In the bustling and packed roads outside the city, there were many walking to and fro. Amidst the peaceful hustle and bustle, a cry of agony suddenly echoed in the distance, leaving many startled.

However, during the investigation carried out after the incident, those who heard the sound clearly  recounted it as this. In the morning which seemed just like any other usual mornings, Old Liu, who had hurriedly left the city, let out a final cry before his disappearance, and it sounded like this, “Blood Warbler…”

A fact that ordinary mortals were oblivious to was that the trusted subordinate of Tianlan Zhenjun, the powerful individual who ruled over the Fleeting Cloud Division as a Hall Master, who was famous even within the massive Immortal Alliance, was a female. Her name was Xue Ying, and her nickname was Blood Warbler.

It is a homophone. The both pronunciations are identical in Chinese.

※※※

By the time the sky lit up, Ding Dang and Lu Chen were already awake.

Without much to say, Ding Dang left swiftly, and Lu Chen sent her only to the road, not accompanying her down the mountain. Silently, he gazed at the back of the lady departing hurriedly.

Did something happen when she was on the mountains?

Why did she look so vulnerable and helpless yesterday night?

Was she afraid of Lu Chen, afraid of death, or was she afraid of something else?

In the end, as she did not continue speaking, Lu Chen did not pursue further.

It didn’t take long for the days to calm down to their usual pace, or perhaps, on the surface, this lifestyle had never changed at all. For perpetuity, the days repeated again and again. After which, Ding Dang didn’t look for Lu Chen anymore. On that night, the words that she spoke of through a slightly trembling voice seemed to only be a somniloquy of the darkness, scattering alongside the wind without a trace remaining.

Lu Chen continued his lonesome life. Occasionally, he headed to the small tavern at the bottom of the mountain to drink while most of the time, he would be in his straw cottage. He tried to cultivate everyday, but because his reformed Five Elemental Divine Compass was a little too lacking in quality, his road to cultivating once more was exceptionally difficult. The amount of spirit energy within his body was negligible and he progressed very little everyday. Even so, Lu Chen wasn’t disheartened. Instead, he persevered on, trudging along the road that he had once walked on.

As for the dark side of the divine compass, ever since that night, he had avoided contact with it.

When he recalled the situation in the darkness that night, Lu Chen clearly remembered that at the moment when the darkness was the most turbulent, he felt a vague sensation of losing control over his rationality and body.

As for the black spirit energy, after the two incidents prior, he was able to confirm that it had something to do with slaughter and death. Lu Chen did not view fresh blood as a taboo, and neither did he fear the darkness. Throughout his long years of reticence, these two have been accompanying him through his days. However, if he could only obtain spirit energy through slaughter and death, then the object was way past the boundaries Lu Chen demarcated in his heart. Furthermore, an unexceptional event made Lu Chen subconsciously maintain his distance from the black divine compass.

That was the pot of bizarre soured rabbit meat.

“Old Liu is dead.”

The scorching sun hung beyond the room, and even though the interiors of the tavern was slightly cooler, it wasn’t any much better. Perspiration beads fell profusely from Old Ma’s forehead. He used his towel to wipe it off, and with his face half covered, he spoke to Lu Chen with a flat voice.

“How did he die?”

“On that day he left the Immortal City, he disappeared after leaving the east gate. Someone heard his scream, but no one was able to find him. When they finally found him, Old Liu had already a become corpse, thrown in the Heisong Forest outside the west gate. Even his body had been chewed into two by wild beasts.”

Lu Chen contemplated for a moment before asking, “Is it the doing of the demonic cult?”

Old Ma sighed and placed his towel down. Then, he said, “During this period of time, the Fleeting Cloud Division had lost two sentinels. It is a confirmed fact that Zhang Jiu Ping had been killed by the demonic cult, but it is hard to say for Old Liu. For the time being, there isn’t any traces of the demonic cult on his body. Furthermore…”

Name: 薛颖 (Xue Ying) Nickname: 血莺/ Blood Warbler (Xue Ying)
It is like a play on her name, although the two words have different pronunciations.

TY Chapter 43: Shadow in the Middle of the Night

Like a prowling dangerous snake, a strong and cold hand instantaneously grabbed the neck of the dark silhouette and exerted force. Along with an alarmed shout and a pained cry, the silhouette outside was dragged into the straw cottage and thrown onto the floor. At the same time, in the deepest corner of the shadows, a black dagger melded into the shadows. Carrying an aura of bloodthirstiness and callousness, it moved in a trajectory toward the heart of the human.

In the darkness, someone was panting, seemingly the sneer of a demon, yet strangely reminiscent of despaired fear, looking forward to spilling fresh blood to quench the trembling excitement within the nightmare.

“Ah!” Someone screamed in shock, with fear and faint sobs mixed within it. In the wind, the voice trembled as a withered grass would.

The wave of darkness billowed violently, rattling the forlorn straw cottage. The treacherous sharp black dagger sliced through the darkness, pierced through the wind, penetrated through the robe and headed straight toward her chest!

His eyes were bright but frigid cold!

In this defining and tense moment, he saw the blurred features on the face and heard that scream of agony.

The darkness suddenly stilled, as though a tidal wave had solidified in midair. All sound disappeared without a trace, and at that moment, it seemed as though even the blood within their bodies have stopped flowing.

The cold and sharp dagger had penetrated through the clothes and plunged into her voluptuous chest. Just an inch deeper, and that could have been the end.

The world outside the cottage seemed to slowly recover and sound, once again, could be heard. The wind blew continuously like the tides, crashing in wave after wave.

The dagger had yet to be retracted, and she lied on the floor with her body completely cold, not daring to move in the slightest.

After an unknown duration, perhaps it might have just been an instant, yet feeling like a lifetime, the frigid sensation that was crushing her heart lifted slowly and retreated back into the darkness.

※※※

Pada! A spark of fire lit up the candle on the table.

The dim glow of the candlelight drove away the darkness, bringing a sliver of warmth to the forlorn straw cottage. When the radiance reached the ground surface, the human figure turned around. It was Ding Dang.

At this moment, she looked like a mess. Her hair was scattered around, her clothes weren’t in place and her face was frighteningly pale. She slowly sat up and looked at the man sitting by the table, as well as the dagger he grasped in his hand.

That was a black and dull dagger.

Lu Chen turned over and gazed at her quietly as well. After a short moment, he walked over and closed the door of the straw cottage.

The mournful wind quietened down instantaneously, and the chill seems to be blocked out by the door. Ding Dang’s complexion recovered slightly. She slowly climbed up from the floor, but fear still reflected in the gaze she directed to Lu Chen. After a moment, she said softly, “You almost killed me just now.”

Lu Chen was silent for a split moment before he kept the black dagger. He walked to the side, poured a bowl of water and passed it to Ding Dang. Then, with a calm voice, he said, “You shouldn’t be trying to sneak into my cottage at such an hour.”

Ding Dang lowered her head. Carrying the bowl with both of her hands, she sat on Lu Chen’s bed and slowly sipped from it.

Lu Chen walked over to the table and pulled out a stool. He sat in front of Ding Dang, not saying a word, and simply sized her up.

Other than the scare a moment ago, Ding Dang did not seem to find anything inappropriate about the situation. However, perhaps due to fatigue, the lady seemed to look a little haggard.

After a moment, Ding Dang placed the bowl by the side and said, “I was too tired and couldn’t walk to the village in such a state. Thus, I wanted to rest at your place for a moment.”

Lu Chen glanced at her and nodded his head, “Sure.”

※※※

There was bedding on top of the bed, and the blanket still carried a trace of warmth. When Ding Dang lied down on it, the thought that Lu Chen had probably lied here a moment ago flashed through her mind. Even though it may not be as comfortable as her home, it was still a place of comfort and warmth from the darkness of the night.

Standing beside the bed, Lu Chen tucked her in. Their gazes happened to meet. The radiance of the candlelight reflected in his eyes. Under the blanket, Ding Dang’s body shuddered slightly, and a sensation, as though she was about to shiver violently, engulfed her. However, a split moment later, Lu Chen walked towards the table and blew out the candlelight.

The darkness collapsed in and his figure blurred. He walked over to the side of the bed and lied on the floor.

That night, they did not speak much. For some reason, the usual jokes and teasing words were completely absent and in its place was silence.

In the darkness, after an inestimable period of time, Ding Dang’s faint voice sounded, “Are you asleep?”

“Not yet.” Lu Chen’s voice could be heard from the ground beside the bed.

After a moment of silence, Ding Dang spoke once more, “Are you cold?”

“It’s still fine, I’m not cold.”

“Don’t you want to ask me why I am acting like that, or why do I always head to the top of the mountains?”

This time, Lu Chen did not speak immediately. He allowed the silence to loom in the darkness for a moment before answering, “If you are unwilling to speak, then I won’t ask.”

Ding Dang didn’t know how to reply. For a very period of time, there wasn’t any sound in the straw cottage. Perhaps, due to the excessive silence, the sound of each other’s breathing could be heard, and perhaps, the beating of their own hearts as well.

Under the blanket, Ding Dang gradually curled up her body. She hugged her chest with both of her hands, as though she was cold. After a moment, she suddenly whispered, “I want to talk to you about some things, is it alright?”

Lu Chen, “Sure.”

“That day, the reason why I went up the mountain to the Dragon Lake was to meet someone.”

Lu Chen, “Un.”

Ding Dang, “That person was Li Ji.”

Lu Chen, “…”

Ding Dang, “I gave to him the Spirit Stones that I borrowed from you along with my savings, so that he would have an opportunity to cultivate under the Thousand Autumn Doors.”

Lu Chen, “…”

Ding Dang, “We made a promise to be together forever. He said that he possessed exceptional talent. As long as he gets a chance with the Immortal Discerning Mirror, he would definitely be accepted as a disciple under Thousand Autumn Doors. When that moment comes, he would bring me in as well, and from then on, we will cultivate toward enlightenment together as a pair of immortal couple.”

Lu Chen, “You believe his words?”

Ding Dang, “Un.”

In the darkness, Lu Chen turned his body sideways as he stared toward an unknown direction in the darkness. After a moment, he said softly, “You are tired. Sleep earlier.”

Ding Dang was silent for a moment before she replied, “Alright.”

※※※

The Immortal City was a massive city. It was where the bustle and commotion of the center continent was concentrated. In this grand city, the humans living within numbered from tens of millions. For many years, the Immortal Alliance had played the role of the dictator within this city. In the era, it was the symbol of the greatest power in the center continent. However, in truth, even the Immortal Alliance, despite being a fear-inducing massive organisation, was unable to fully control the magnificently gigantic city.

The death of the Fleeting Cloud Division’s Zhang Jiu Ping caused a massive tremor within the Immortal Alliance, even inducing the anger of several prominent and fearsome zhenjuns. However, in the giant city, the matter did not concern most of the population here.

I don’t think I have expressed it well, but by dull, I actually mean that it doesn’t reflect light.

In the darkness, someone is panting, seemingly as though the sneer of a demon, yet strangely reminiscent of despaired fear, looking forward to spilling fresh blood to quench the trembling excitement within the nightmare.
It is clearly stated that the trembling excitement refers to his will to battle.

Immortal couple
I couldn’t find a good word for this phrase, but it has the idea of ‘eternal’ and ‘perfect’ couple.

TY Chapter 42: Sour Rabbit Meat

Old Liu gasped deeply. Then, he asked, “Who is the demonic cult looking for?”

“No idea. Most of the identities of these Shadows have been concealed, to the point that even we don’t know much about them.”

Old Liu contemplated for a moment before flashing a bitter smile, “If it was to hunt down a Shadow that the demonic cult is willing to kill in the Immortal City, then the identity of the Shadow must be exceptionally important. Who could it be?”

Someone suddenly harrumphed, “There are only 72 sentinels in the Fleeting Cloud Division, but the number of Shadows beneath, be it in the open or in the shadows, are multiple times of our numbers. How can it be easy to find an individual of the lot?”

Old Liu contemplated for a moment and continued, “Old Zhang is a capable worker. If I recall correctly, the number of Shadows he is in contact with should be the most numerous of us.”

No one replied him. Old Liu smiled bitterly and scanned the surroundings before speaking quietly, “Perhaps, it might just be a coincidence. But if it isn’t, then… there is a traitor among us.”

Old Liu looked around and smiled bitterly once more before turning around to leave. As he departed, faint mutterings could be heard from his mouth, “From there on, the world will no longer be at peace…”

※※※

Pah!

A rabbit suddenly thrown on the table scared Old Ma. He lifted his head to look at Lu Chen and asked, “What are you doing?”

Lu Chen sat opposite him and said, “I have been drinking your wine for free all along. So, today I went to the mountain to catch a wild rabbit for you so as to accompany the wine.”

Old Ma looked at him suspiciously, “Is it possible for you to be so thoughtful?”

Lu Chen replied, “It was convenient for me.”

Old Ma grabbed the wild rabbit by its ear and scanned it, “Is this rabbit poisoned?”

“It isn’t. I don’t do stuff like that.”

Old Ma spat and looked at Lu Chen in disdain, “I don’t think that there is anything that you won’t do. The poison that you had used against others back then should be enough to kill everyone in this village!”

Lu Chen answers seriously, “I didn’t say that I had never poisoned others. What I meant was that there isn’t any need to poison you. Never will I do pointless stuff like that.”

“The hell!” Old Ma directed a kick toward Lu Chen, and he dodged it without difficulty. Then, Old Ma carried the rabbit and walked pompously to the kitchen at the back.

An hour later, a large pot of steaming fragrant braised rabbit meat was placed on the wine table, inducing other customers’ salivation.

Lu Chen offered a rare praise to Old Ma, “Looks like your skills aren’t bad.”

Old Ma wiped the sweat off his forehead and gleefully said, “Of course!” Then, without inviting Lu Chen to dig in, he picked up the chopsticks, grabbed a piece of the rabbit meat, dumped it into his mouth and started chewing it with large motions.

Lu Chen chuckled and picked up his chopsticks as well. Just as he was about to stretch his chopsticks out, he heard an indistinct ‘hm‘ from Old Ma’s mouth, and he spat out the rabbit meat onto the table.

Lu Chen frowned, “What’s wrong? Can it be that you really managed to consume poison out of nothingness?”

Baji baji, Old Ma opened and shut his mouth several times, seemingly trying to get rid of the taste from his mouth. With a bizarre expression, he said, “There’s something wrong with the rabbit meat. Why is it so sour? It shouldn’t be though?”

Lu Chen was taken aback. He put down the chopsticks in his hand and his gaze swept across the pot of rabbit meat. After a short moment, he asked softly, “Very sour?”

“Incomparably sour, that’s weird!” Old Ma grabbed the wine by the side to gargle his mouth. Then, he shook his head and said, “What ill luck! I have never ate such sour rabbit meat in my entire life. Where did you catch if from?”

Lu Chen stared at the rabbit meat quietly for a moment before replying, “On the tea mountain.”

Old Ma mumbled for a bit. After a momentary pause, he couldn’t resist giving it another try. In the end, in less than a split moment, he spat it out once more and cursed, “The heck, this isn’t a wild rabbit but a sour rabbit! Hm, Lu Chen, why aren’t you trying it?”

Lu Chen’s face was expressionless. After a moment, he said, “You have already tried it. Can I possibly not trust your word? There is no way to consume this rabbit meat like this, let’s just dump it.”

After which, he stood up and left the tavern.

※※※

Walking along the bluestone pavement, Lu Chen’s expression was awful. With his gaze fixated at the front, he continued walking silently all the way back to his straw cottage at the foot of the mountain.

Just as he was about to enter his cottage, his body suddenly stopped and he raised his head to stare at the tea mountain.

At the faraway mountain peak, everything was serene as usual. The mountainous wind blew on the tea trees and the forests on top were silent. That was, except for the black smoke that was drifting up from the direction of the back mountain slightly further away.

There wasn’t a flame or a torch, neither was there a figure waving anything. All he could see was a few wisp of black smoke rising upward.

Lu Chen stood quietly on the spot as he stared at the black smoke in the distant mountain. After a short moment, he opened the door and walked in. Peng, he shut the door tightly, as though shutting out the world behind him.

The sound of the wind gradually grew louder, and it contained a mournful tinge to it. The sky started to dim and the dark night was about to set in.

The wind was exceptionally strong that night.

The chilling wind blew across the tea mountain and past the straw cottage. A tinge of coldness seem to seeped in through the walls, causing one to doubt that it was winter instead of summer in that instant. The wind was also exceptionally desolate, similar to the heart-rending cry of a female, echoing in the dark night.

It was already pitch black outside. Lu Chen lied completely still on the bed in the straw cottage. His eyes were shut, as though he was in a deep slumber. Even the howl of the cold wind outside was unable to awaken him.

Suddenly, a nearly imperceptible sound mixed in with the cold wind. In this world of darkness, it sounded like careful footsteps approaching this straw cottage. A few patches of thatched grass on the roof of the cottage shook in the face of the blowing wind.

A silhouette appeared in the midst of the darkness as it approached the straw cottage. The inaudible footsteps varied in terms of heaviness, as though an apparition of a demon in the night wind. When it reached the door of the cottage, the silhouette stopped its footsteps suddenly.

The frigid night wind continued to blow in this darkness-cloaked world. At this moment, the tea mountain seemed exceptionally eerie, fearsome and towering. The shadow of the mountain was reminiscent of a giant, a giant that would crush those below at any moment.

In the darkness, a breathing seemed to hasten, and a heart seemed to beat furiously. In the silence, the silhouette lifted its hand and brought it toward the door.

The night sky grew darker, and the exteriors of the straw cottage was veiled in complete darkness. Only a black figure that was reminiscent of a dense congregation of ink could be seen. As the silhouette was about to come into contact with the door, the door burst open suddenly, and the crisp sound of which loomed in the air.

Seemingly taken aback, the silhouette in the darkness froze for a moment. In this split moment, a massive congregation of dark shadows from the interiors of the straw cottage surged outward and covered the silhouette outside.

TY Chapter 41: Black Flames of the Dead

The gray rabbit cowered backward and continued to stare at the person who just appeared warily. However, there didn’t seem to be an obvious killing intent coming from that person. Thus, the simple-minded rabbit did not immediately turn around to flee.

Both of its ears were however, still taut upwards. Soon, it realised that it should keep a distance away from the dangerous human, thus, it pulled its stretched-out head backward and prepared to escape.

At the instant that it lowered its head, the two long ears of the gray rabbit twitched suddenly. At that instant, that little animal seemed to hear something, a shrilling and desolate sound of an object ripping through the air.

The gray rabbit lifted its head, but it was too late. A wave of coldness enveloped it. Reflected in its eyes in its final moments was a cold merciless black dagger slicing through the air. Without a single sound, it pierced through the chest of the rabbit easily.

The gray rabbit collapsed and fell into the bushes. A short moment later, a trail of blood flowed from the bushes. Walking over, Lu Chen squatted beside the bush and grabbed the lifeless rabbit. Taking a glance at it, he retrieved his dagger.

The black dagger had pierced through the chest of the gray rabbit, causing it to die instantaneously.

Lu Chen quietly watched as crimson-red blood flowed from its wound. Without warning, his body jolted. In that instant, his expression was indescribably profound and bizarre. In it, a hint of shock, surprise, comprehension and finally, as well as incredulously, fear.

※※※

A wisp of black spirit energy quietly seeped into his body once again. It slowly moved through his meridians, as though a black apparition. Within his dantian spirit sea, a black Five Elemental Divine Compass rose, causing his dantian to transform into a world of darkness. At the center of this bizarre world, a flicker of black flame burned unspectacularly.

That wisp of black spirit energy circulated through the meridians of his entire body once before silently entering his dantian. Then, as though a water droplet converging as one with the ocean, it was propelled by an intangible force and melded into the black flames.

The black flame shuddered and wavered for a moment before calming down yet again.

Nothing seemed to have changed.

However, Lu Chen knew and sensed a change. It was so minor that it could be negligible, but he still felt the black flame, upon absorption of the wisp of black spirit energy, grew stronger by a slight bit.

What exactly was that black spirit energy?

Lu Chen lowered his head to look at the lifeless rabbit, and his face suddenly turned peculiarly pale.

Two times, by the clear stream at the bottom of the mountain and by the bushes in the tea mountain, a small fish and a gray rabbit. The two events seemed to be completely unrelated with one another, but they had a common point of similarity.

That was, when the two were struggling for their lives, when their lives were about to come to an end and when death was approaching them, Lu Chen felt a wisp of the fearsome and terrifying black spirit energy seeping into his body.

That kind of power and that kind of spirit energy was something that was unheard of. It did not belong to the five elements and vaguely roamed between life and death.

It seemed to… smell of death, death spirit energy?

Zhang Jiu Ping was thirty-seven year old. With a responsible personality, he did his job seriously. He originated from a renowned sect, Tianluo Sect, and his cultivation realm wasn’t weak. He was entrusted by his sect to work in the Immortal Alliance. After roaming among several halls, three years ago, he came under the Fleeting Cloud Division that was under the command of the trusted subordinate of Tianlan Zhenjun, Xue Ying, and became a sentinel.

A sentinel was a great yet terrible job. The advantage to it was that it didn’t involve much killing. Sentinels were only responsible of contacting those ‘Shadows’ with mysterious backgrounds, and sometimes, they could even earn some additional Spirit Stones. It was a safe and lucrative job. On the other hand, the Shadows under the Fleeting Cloud Division, other than the few who managed to muddle into their ranks to make a living out of it, most of them were peculiar individuals with bizarre personalities. Furthermore, having to patrol outside for most of the time, it can be considered quite a tough job.

Zhang Jiu Ping had been in his job for three years for now. These three years, he had carried out his responsibilities well, making nearly no errors. Thus, quite a few influential figures in the Immortal Alliance had high hopes for him. After putting him through a bit more hardship, they intended to promote him to a more important position, perhaps even to govern a subsidiary organisation by himself.

Just that, luck is a mysterious and inexplicable thing. The man, after laying dormant for many years, just as he was about to achieve success, had something happen to him suddenly.

Without any foreboding signs or clues, this exceptional sentinel of the Immortal Alliance’s Fleeting Cloud Division suddenly died in the depths of an inconspicuous alley by Zhuque street in the south of the Immortal City.

He died very tragically. There were bloodstains all over his body. When his corpse was noticed, it was swiftly sent back to the Fleeting Cloud Division. The culprit was determined as likely to be from the Three Realm Divine Cult, because there were traces of a cultivation technique unique to the cult on his body. Other than that, Zhang Jiu Ping’s innumerable wounds were determined to be not a result of battle. Based on the words of several individuals of special standing from the Immortal Alliance who examined the corpse, it was likely to be the result of an interrogation method.

It was hard to imagine what kind of person would dare to lay their hands on the Immortal Alliance where over tens of thousands of cultivator sects all over the world were congregated, given its name as the dominant power on the center continent. However, if the culprit was the Three Realm Divine Cult, the puzzles seemed to fit together perfectly.

Furthermore, the very fact that the incident happened in the Immortal City, right under the eyelids of the Immortal Alliance, made the top brass incensed. As such, it was clear to see that the Three Realm Divine Cult, which had maintained a low profile for many years, had grown arrogant.

All kinds of orders to look into the matter flew out continuously from the Immortal Alliance, and the atmosphere in the massive Immortal City grew tense. In addition to the tense atmosphere within the Fleeting Cloud Division, there was a hint of gloom.

Old Liu stepped out from the room where the corpse was laid. Outside the room, there were quite a few people who have gathered and most of them were from the Fleeting Cloud Division. There were also others who were close to the Fleeting Cloud Division who came to listen into the news. He took in a deep breath. Despite his horrible complexion, he did not say anything, only silently shaking his head. After a moment, he said with a suppressed tone, “Tragic.”

The hushed atmosphere took another dive. Some people started to curse.

Old Liu sighed and looked toward the sky. With a deep voice, he questioned, “How did Old Zhang provoke those lunatics from the demonic cult?”

By the side, another sentinel from the Fleeting Cloud Division harrumphed silently, “Who knows, those lunatics don’t obey common sense.” At this point, he paused and mused. “Old Zhang keeps quite a low profile, so it is unlikely for him to have a grudge with the demonic cult. Perhaps… the demonic cult sought him out for other matters?”

Old Liu raised his head, and at the same time, the others happened to look over as well. Exchanging gazes, their complexions darkened and at the same time, they mutter together, “Shadows!”

TY Chapter 40: Descend of the Dark Night

On his way to the tavern, Lu Chen stopped as he passed by the large Chinese scholar tree. He first glanced at the tree root before walking over to the giant rock with a smile. Facing the old fisherman who was seated on it, fishing, he asks, “Old Yu, how’s the fishing going today?”

Old Yu’s hat rotated from one side to the other as the person in question remained silent.

As one who had foreseen such an outcome, Lu Chen smiled even more brightly. He squatted next to Old Yu and said, “I say, Old Yu, persisting on like that here isn’t a solution.”

Not saying a word, the old fisherman glanced at him doltishly. Ignoring him, Lu Chen continued speaking with a bright smile, “Why don’t we change a location to fish?”

Old Yu frowned, “Where?”

Lu Chen pointed to the mountain in the distance and said, “The Dragon Lake on top of the mountain. It rains often there and the water is deep. Perhaps, you might find the large fish that you are seeking there.”

Old Yu shook his head blankly, “The mountain is too high up. Besides, why would there be any fish on top of a mountain?”

Lu Chen chuckled. Just as he was about to continue persuading him, he suddenly noticed a twinkle by his peripheral vision, and all of a sudden, the fishing rod floating in the water shook violently.

At that instant, Lu Chen and Old Yu was flabbergasted. After such a long period of time, everyone had already gotten used to the feeling of being unable to fish anything from this stream. Is this going to change today?

A split moment later, Old Yu and Lu Chen bounced upwards. They fumbled about in a fluster, shouting here and there as they hurriedly pulled up the fishing pole. A short moment later, the fishing line was pulled in and the two of them immediately glanced at the end of the rod, only to see an ordinary fish of about a palm’s size hanging there.

It was slightly larger than the gray-colored fishes in the stream, sufficiently large to bite on the bait, but insufficiently so to be considered a large fish.

The two stared at one another. After a moment, Old Yu sat down once again doltishly while Lu Chen shrugged his shoulders and grabbed the fish to unhook it. At the same time, he said, “Alright, even if these kind of fishes are rare, perhaps, there might be a chance in the future…”

Halfway through his words, Lu Chen’s voice suddenly trailed off. When his hand grabbed the fish, whose mouth was impaled by the fish hook and was struggling furiously but to no avail, suddenly, a bizarre aura carrying a wisp of cold desolate intent appeared from nowhere, and seeped into his meridians.

Almost at the same moment, Lu Chen felt a jolt in the dantian spirit sea within his body. His Five Elemental Divine Compass appeared suddenly and flipped over. Black aura surged in all directions. As though the howl of demons, the darkness roared and an incomparably dense congregation of darkness shrouded over everything.

Pa dah!

A dull thump echoing by his side, Old Yu turned around to take a look, only to see the small fish falling heavily onto the floor from Lu Chen’s hands. The fish hook had slipped out from the fish’s mouth but curiously, the hook had lodged itself onto the fish’s body, piercing through the abdomen of the small fish.

The small fish flopped a few times on the floor before losing its strength rapidly and passing away.

Old Yu frowned and looked at Lu Chen. “It is not like this fish could be eaten. There is no point to killing it, so why not release it instead?”

After which, he turned back and placed a new bait onto the hook before casting his rod to continue fishing.

Lu Chen stood quietly at the back of the old fisherman. For a very long time, he remained quiet. After a long while, when even Old Yu became slightly puzzled by his behavior, Lu Chen’s voice, deep and slow, sounded behind him, “You are right. I have overdid it.”

Old Yu found the situation queer. Turning around to look at Lu Chen, there was nothing off about his expression. Calm as usual, and there did not seem to be anything wrong about him. Thus, lazy to bother about him, Old Yu’s attention returned back to the surface of the water.

Lu Chen continued to stand there for a period of time before eventually turning around to leave. He didn’t continue walking inward, toward the center of the village, even though Old Ma’s small tavern wasn’t too far away. Instead, he changed direction and headed toward the tea mountain once more, back to the straw cottage at the foot of the mountain.

Before walking into his cottage, he took a look upward toward the tea mountain. There wasn’t a single human figure that could be seen on the serene peak of the mountain. It was hard to tell where Ding Dang was at that instant. Perhaps, she might be trudging along a certain part of the mountainous path.

Returning back to his straw cottage, Lu Chen sat on the bed without making a single sound. Then, with a lowered head, he fell into contemplation. Bit by bit, he recalled what happened earlier, every single aspect and portion of it, even every single motion and sensation; he did not allow any of it to escape him

His expression gradually grew cold, as his gaze brightened and sharpened. He seemed to have vaguely guessed something. After a moment, he stood up abruptly and walked toward the door. At the same time, on his right hand which was hanging by the side of his body, his fingers opened up slightly. A black dagger silently slid from his sleeve into his hand.

The sun outside the cottage was radiant and the sky was clear. He looked at the surroundings through squinted eyes. After musing for a short moment, he started heading towards the tea mountain.

The mountain was extremely tranquil. With the exception of the rustling of the tea trees due to the mountainous winds, rarely could other sounds be heard. Occasionally, the chirping of birds could be heard from the woods in the distant. The tea mountain wasn’t a towering and vast mountain, but there were quite some wildlife on it. Just that, many years ago, the ground of the front of the mountains had been cultivated by humans to grow tea trees. As a result, many birds and beasts had migrated from the region toward the peak or the back of the mountain to avoid the humans.

The blade of the black dagger Lu Chen held in his hand was dull, it being impossible for even a sliver of light to reflect from it, its radiance concealed deep within it. Yet, its edge was exceptionally thin. His hand was steady and peaceful, but for some reason, the dagger seemed to be trembling in agitation. It wasn’t out of fear, but out of a long-awaited reunion, the kind of agitation derived from long years of mutual absence.

Even the dagger itself seemed to be craving for something.

The man’s gaze scanned the surrounding as he proceeded forwardly slowly. Unknowingly, indifference filled his face.

When he reached the halfway mark of the mountain, the forest had gradually grew silent. However, at that altitude, chirping from the surrounding birds crescendoed. On the branches of some high-rising trees, the shadows of squirrels could be seen.

Suddenly, the grass in front shook and a gray-colored head popped out. It was a gray rabbit that could be frequently spotted in the wilderness here. Its mouth vibrated non-stop, as though it was chewing on something. At the same moment, it surveyed its surroundings warily.

Then, it spotted Lu Chen standing on the mountainous path not too far away.

That was a gentle man with a calm expression. For an instant, a trace of a tender smile seemed to be hanging on the edge of his lips. Clearly, the wisp of cold desolate aura that seemed to hang on him a moment ago had disappeared without a trace.
